Los problemas de visión derivados de la diabetes afectan ya a 1,6 millones de españoles

Este jueves 14 de noviembre se celebra el Día Mundial de la Diabetes, una enfermedad que afecta a 6 millones de españoles, de los cuales el 30% tiene problemas de visión.

Según datos del Consejo General de Colegios de Ópticos-Optometristas (CGCOO), la retinopatía diabética (RD) y el edema macular diabético (EMD) son las complicaciones oculares más habituales de los diabéticos. La retinopatía diabética está considerada la principal causa de ceguera en la edad laboral, al afectar hasta a un 65% de los pacientes con diabetes tipo 1 y a entre un 20% y un 25% de las personas con diabetes tipo 2. La mayoría de estas complicaciones se derivan de la falta de prevención, por lo que resulta clave detectar a tiempo sus signos y síntomas a través de la realización de revisiones periódicas por su optometrista. Desde el CGCOO resaltan que casi la mitad (41%) de los pacientes nunca había sido revisado por un especialista. Este porcentaje es similar al que obtienen otras series nacionales (46,8%).

Desde el CGCOO reiteran la importancia de tomar conciencia de que la detección temprana y el tratamiento adecuado pueden prevenir la pérdida de visión y reducir el impacto de la diabetes en los pacientes con patologías crónicas, en particular, y en la sociedad, a nivel general.

Además, de acuerdo con los datos que maneja el Consejo General de Colegios de Ópticos-Optometristas, la mitad de las personas ciegas por complicaciones de la diabetes nunca había acudido a una revisión visual.

Según el CGCOO, hacen falta estrategias preventivas, pero, sobre todo, un control eficaz de las posibles complicaciones, más aún cuando sabemos que los costes directos para el SNS de la diabetes alcanzan los 5.000 millones de euros.
